World Lung Cancer Day 2023

“Running” towards lung cancer goals with patient advocate James Hiter

James Hiter is a lung cancer patient advocate who never thought he’d live to see his son get married. He attended their nuptials this past spring. All the while, he’s setting new personal records with his consecutive daily running streak, which has surpassed 1,000+ days – all with just one lung. It’s all thanks to lung cancer research.

In 2016, then 46-year-old James Hiter was a streaker – not the naked kind, but an avid runner with 764 consecutive days of hitting the pavement. A bout of bronchitis led to a routine chest x-ray that revealed two masses in his right lung, forever changing his perspective on life and lung cancer awareness.

As a lifelong never-smoker who experienced none of the typical lung cancer symptoms, James’s diagnosis was shocking. After surgery to remove one lobe of his right lung confirmed cancer, he transformed his experience into a mission to educate others about lung cancer risks – especially the dangers of radon exposure, the second-leading cause of lung cancer.

Today, James is a passionate patient advocate who has appeared on several Hope With Answers: Living With Lung Cancer Podcast episodes. Through his non-profit, Streak For a Cure, he raises awareness that anyone with lungs can get lung cancer while fundraising for vital research. His advocacy extends to promoting home radon testing, empowering families to protect themselves from this silent environmental risk.
