Breath of Honor: Lung Cancer Screening for Veterans

Veteran and lung cancer patient/advocate, Jim Pantelas says, “What I would tell vets is that if you’re breathing, you can get lung cancer. Getting screened is a no-brainer.”

Jim Pantelas’ journey from Vietnam era veteran to lung cancer survivor and advocate is a testament to resilience, hope, and the power of modern medicine. As a member of LCFA’s Veterans Speakers Bureau, Jim brings a unique perspective to the fight against lung cancer, drawing from his personal experiences and unwavering commitment to helping others.

Diagnosed with stage 3b non-small cell adenocarcinoma in 2005, Jim faced a grim prognosis with less than 1% two-year survival rate. His exposure to Agent Orange and asbestos during his Navy service likely contributed to his diagnosis. Despite the challenges, including aggressive treatments and the birth of his first child during this time, Jim persevered.

Today, Jim has been cancer-free since 2006, defying the odds and inspiring others. His survival story showcases the advancements in lung cancer treatment and the importance of early detection. Jim’s experience navigating the healthcare system as both a cancer patient and an advocate for his daughter, who faced her own health crisis, has made him a valuable asset in patient advocacy.

Jim’s involvement extends beyond his personal story. He actively participates in Institutional Review Boards, focusing on both pediatric and lung cancer research ethics. His unique blend of military service, personal health battles, and advocacy work make him a compelling speaker for media engagements on topics ranging from veterans’ health issues to advancements in lung cancer treatment.

Through his work with LCFA, Jim continues to embody the service-driven ethos he developed in the military, now fighting on the frontlines of lung cancer awareness and patient support.
