Jared Mayers, MD, PhD

During his Ph.D. research under the mentorship of Dr. Matthew Vander Heiden, he investigated how the unique tissue-of-origin shapes the metabolic behaviors of pancreatic and lung cancers. He completed clinical training in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital before pursuing postdoctoral research at Harvard University under Dr. Emily Balskus. There, he combined biochemistry and microbiology to trace metabolic alterations in human microbiomes. His bedside-to-bench training has been recognized with honors including the ASCI Emerging Generation Award, the Science and SciLife Prize in Translational Medicine, and being named a Searle Scholar.

His current appointment as a pulmonologist at Fred Hutch Cancer Center integrates his unique professional background across oncology, pulmonology, and biochemistry to tackle how the low-biomass environment of the lung acts as a catalyst for disease progression.
