Jim Fackler, a Vietnam veteran, faced a harrowing journey from a persistent cough to an extensive stage small cell lung cancer diagnosis. Initially misdiagnosed with asthma due to COVID-19 restrictions, Jim’s condition worsened until a private physician ordered a CT scan, revealing the shocking truth.

The diagnosis: stage 4 small cell lung cancer with metastases in the brain, hip, and abdomen. However, recent advances in lung cancer research offered a glimmer of hope. A biopsy revealed a specific protein in Jim’s tumor, qualifying him for a groundbreaking clinical trial.

The trial combined chemotherapy, radiation, and oral immunotherapy. The results were remarkable: all metastatic lesions disappeared, and the primary lung tumor shrank significantly. Despite facing unexpected health challenges post-treatment, Jim’s spirit remains unbroken.

Today, Jim continues his treatment with regular infusions. He and his wife Gail have traveled extensively since his diagnosis, embracing life with renewed vigor. Their story highlights the critical importance of accurate diagnosis, advanced research, and clinical trials in the fight against lung cancer.
