Immunotherapy Before Surgery for Lung Cancer

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a treatment for certain lung cancer cancer patients before surgery to remove their lung cancer tumor. This treatment is immunotherapy combined with specific chemotherapy. It is designed for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who are eligible for surgery. This neoadjuvant immunotherapy (treatment BEFORE surgery) is for patients who have been diagnosed with early-stage disease. Early stage disease is when the tumor is found only in your lung and hasn’t spread to your lymph nodes.

In this Hope With Answers℠ video, you will get answers that will help you and your doctor discuss if immunotherapy treatment before surgery could be right for you.

Watch this video where lung cancer patient and expert advocate, Lysa Buonanno, talks with Dr. Kellie N. Smith of Johns Hopkins Medical Center. They discuss how the ability to treat patients with immunotherapeutics before their tumor is removed surgically can help those patients live longer.

Immunotherapy is a treatment that harnesses your body’s immune system to kill cancer cells. In response to Lysa’s question about what immunotherapy before surgery means for the future of lung cancer treatments, Dr. Smith says,

“We think we’re going to start seeing patients live longer and live disease free for longer after they have the surgery.”
